Material Properties & Sustainable Use

Material Properties & Sustainable Use

Is robinia wood available with FSC® certification?

Yes – upon request, we supply FSC®-certified products. Many of our partner facilities are also certified, ensuring full traceability throughout the supply chain.

What is the origin of the robinia wood used by ROBINIO?

Our timber comes exclusively from sustainably managed natural forests in Southeastern Europe – never from plantations. To preserve the forest ecosystem, we harvest carefully by hand, primarily during the winter months.

Is robinia wood a genuine alternative to tropical hardwood?

Yes, definitely! Robinia matches the durability of many tropical woods, yet comes from European sources – making it a far more sustainable and eco-friendly choice.

Does robinia wood require chemical wood protection?

No. Robinia’s rich natural tannins provide lasting protection against fungi, insects and rotting – even under permanent exposure to soil and moisture.

How durable is robinia wood in outdoor use?

Robinia wood is classified in durability class 1–2 according to DIN 68364 / EN 350-2, making it one of the most durable hardwoods in Europe. Depending on the application, it lasts 30 to 50 years outdoors – even without chemical treatment.

Maintenance & Material Properties

Maintenance & Material Properties

How does robinia differ from oak or chestnut?

Robinia wood is harder, more elastic, and significantly more resistant to moisture and pest infestation than oak or sweet chestnut. With a fresh density of 930 kg/m³, it surpasses most native hardwoods in both strength and durability.

Is cracking common in robinia timber?

Yes – similar to other hardwoods, robinia may exhibit drying or tension-related cracking, especially in round sections and larger profiles. Such features are typical of the material’s natural behaviour and have no negative impact on its structural performance or longevity.

Does robinia wood change colour when exposed to outdoor conditions?

Fresh robinia wood ranges from yellowish-olive to brown, but when exposed to the elements, it develops a uniform silvery-grey patina. This natural weathering does not affect the wood’s durability or structural integrity.

How much maintenance does robinia wood require?

Robinia timber is notably low in maintenance. It may be left untreated to develop a natural grey patina, or optionally oiled to maintain its original colouring over time.
